Wednesday’s Wreath…a GIVEAWAY!

Funny, the inspiration you can find in the clearance sale bins at Michael’s! Tulle on sale, in a color I haven’t used before…some pretty pink buttons, a piece of pink felt, left over blue fabric, and some wavy blue sparkle yarn (also on clearance). Put it all together around a wreath form and voila:

With a few sheer pink ribbons throughout:

Blue felt too:

And no, it goes with NONE of our home decor. It’s too foo-foo for Dear Daughter, and I’ll be lucky to get the buttons I’ve chosen as “filler” back from the toddler in order to finish this pretty take on a blue mood.

Eureka!

A giveaway! Yeppers, I want to guarantee that this blue/pink/tulle combo goes to a blue/pink/tulle loving home! Leave a comment on this blog post (or at Kindergarten’s 3 R’s, same post) by next Wednesday, May 5, and I’ll draw the winning name to be posted on Saturday!

I’ll post another photo once the wreath is completed- you know, after I sneak the buttons away from the toddler during his nap!~

(Nes)quik to Candy Container

Dear Daughter is getting on the plane this afternoon to fly to Vegas (family wedding) and wanted a “cute candy container” to transport her pecan/rolo/pretzel nummies on board. We are a family that does reuse and recycle, though not as much as we could (moving every other year has that effect, though what we don’t take with us, we donate), but we are indeed, making an effort.
Photobucket

Case in point: our toddler loves “bunny milk,” and the empty containers left over each time he finishes either the chocolate or strawberry powders (sometimes we mix them!) are perfect storage containers for pens/pencils/markers or any other bits and bobs I have in my craft area. The bright yellow plastic certainly makes for cheery projects!

Here’s the clean container wrapped in pretty paper:

Floral ribbon to cover the edge of the paper:

Paper cut to fit the lid:

Chipboard letters that spell “candy”:

Some sparkle, photo corners, and the hint to “enjoy:”

But even better FULL:

“Wed tain Mommy, wed tain!”

“Boo-boo cykul Mommy, boo-boo cykul…” (a friend’s bike was hit by a driverless car this morning- the bike’s rear fender is toast, and the paintjob is scratched, but our friend is fine! Yes, I typed “driverless…”)

And Miss Laurie from Laurie’s Charming Designs entered me into a drawing for one of her paper flowers! It arrived just in time to join me in reading the newest Somerset Life, that just so happens to feature Laurie’s beautiful birds (pages 70-73):

Take a look at the beautiful handpainted envelope! Thanks so much Laurie, I’m enjoying reading about your “soft perches” and will find a special place for my beautiful flower!

I’m looking forward to reading the other entries this week!

Crafting and Creativity

  • I’m inspired to take a Trip Around the World while crafting in my own home, thanks to Lisa at Celebrate Creativity In All Its Forms, and all I need is fabric, thread, a sewing machine, and a rotary cutter!
  • Inspired Ideas, volume 1, number 2 offers a tutorial on how to make Friendship Pins

Several!

  • Laurie makes the old new again (with the help of hand-crafted fine-feathered-friends) at Laurie’s Charming Designs
  • Visual Voice offers terrific photos documenting the fine art of bell pulling…
  • Have you checked out Blogtations yet? Quotes from blogs, and today my favorite is this: “Everyone knows that, if you want to give a child an exciting horticultural experience, have them plant a bean seed—because they sprout in a week and are a hardy plant. Not here. My garden is the kiss of death to a seed which millions of kindergartners have successfully sprouted before they ever learned how to read.” Whine Country

Tulle Time/Americana/Think

What to do with leftover tulle, red and blue fabric, and red polka-dotted ribbon?

Make a new wreath to go with my updated patriotic decor, of course!

I had enough fabric and tulle left over to make a mini-wreath as well:

It’s small enough to fit inside the opening on the larger wreath, but it looks a bit overkill on the tulle, if you ask me (so no, they won’t be kept like this):

SallyJean has posted her April Celebration List...CakeSpy posts a tribute (with history) to one of my favorite treats, the macaroon cookie (what do you mean it’s “ugly?”)…

mbartdesign has some cute altered art charm bracelets (patriotic even!)

Linda Bertino at Charming Trinkets also has too-many-charms-are-never-enough jewelry that include brooches and barrettes, sorted by category: Patriotic; Tea/Java Joy; Fish and Sea Life; and many more. Though many of her pieces are marked “sold,” it appears she takes custom orders and can come close to duplicating what you might find on her site.

And if you want to immerse yourself in Americana decor, try The Country Porch...

Here’s an idea…Why not visit the presidential candidates’ official web sites instead of listening to biased pundits, talk-show hosts, spin doctors, and celebrities who would like to do your thinking for you? I know the sites are professionally produced as well, but for those of us who won’t be able to meet (much less chat with) the candidates in person, this might just be the best way to get as close to each horses’ mouth as possible. Review their ideas, check their voting record, listen to their messages and form your own opinion:

Show and Share Thursday: Mom’s Gift

Mom received her gift, a day before her birthday:

I’m certain the gift tag was a hint, since I used part of one of her favorite photos on it- the flowers are fireweed.

Inside the multiple layers of bubblewrap, Mom found some Scrabble tile holders that spelled out her family’s name, and this shadowbox:

This was one of the projects featured in Mark Montano’s Big A** Book of Crafts that I told you about in an earlier post.

I started with two copies of a photograph of my grandmother, mother and uncle standing in a field of fireweed in Alaska:

Using a very sharp x-acto knife, I cut around the image of the family, then placed it on top of the unaltered/uncut photo, using two or three layers of sticky adhesive foam squares:

Using the squares gave a 3-D effect, raising my family slightly out of the field:

I had several choices when it came to altering the photo further: doing more cutouts, which I decided against because the focus was the family; adding whimsical details like fairy wings, birds, stamps which frankly, just wouldn’t “fit” my family; and adding lettering, an oh-so-appropriate choice for a teacher:

Chipboard letters, or stickers?

For size and font, I chose the stickers, and went about figuring out placement:

The shadowbox itself was lined with a dull gray mat, so I played with some papers that seemed to compliment the lettering:

Once the papers were adhered to the interior walls of the box, it was time to add the altered photo:

For some reason, the photos I took of arranging the Scrabble tile rack, silk flowers, and pink beads didn’t turn out, so here is the final product:

With the scraps from the second photo, I chose a section of fireweed to use on Mom’s gift tag.

It’s a project I’m looking forward to doing again, possibly working with black and white photos next time- thanks Mark, for the idea and the how-to!

What would a birthday be without cake, preferably, cupcakes?Creampuffs in Venice tried some whimsical mini-cupcakes with very pretty floral icingTrophy Cupcakes and Party in Seattle was just featured on Martha (oh my goodness they make some beautiful, and apparently delicious cupcakes!)……and while Laura Rebecca’s Kitchen shared this recipe for coffee cake, I’m wondering how it would turn out if the batter was spooned into a cupcake tin instead…

Num, num num num!~

More Blogs

Big surprise, I’ve found some more wonderful blogs!

****************************************************

~Joy has a charming blog, really! Cupids’ Charm has had most of my attention this weekend, since I love china, even broken bits of it, and ADORE jewelry made with porcelain treasures… Go here to see the most beautiful spring bunny charm bracelet- I’ve happily subscribed so I can get all of Joy’s latest news, thoughts, and photos of her treasured creations!

~With categories such as “Beautiful Books,” ” Cultured as a Pearl,” “Gaze Upon This,” “Hooray for Holidays,” “Something Sparkly” and “The Universe is My Catalog,” how could anyone ignore ToMama’s Dwell on These Things? Yes, I know, I know… I know YOU know that she had me as soon as she used the word “sparkly…”

~While the textile lover in me lives vicariously through other spinners, weavers and knitters (Rosie, Mom…), I have no intention of picking up a set of knitting needles or making room for a loom. That leaves me to lurk at blogs such as Spincerely Yours, though I’ll admit, I am green with envy over Tamara’s gorgeous new “Wild Cherry” washer and dryer!

Serene Saturday, Creative Space

Filed under crafts, home decor, links

Here was my morning view from the couch, coffee in hand:

Sunlight pouring in, temperature not-too-hot, quiet in the neighborhood. After finishing off my first mug of liquid morning energy, I poured another and moved to the computer to check email and read blogs. Pearl, at A Storybook Life, posted “Creative Spaces- Nurturing Our Need to Create” (part one) and I was instantly rescued from the other blog entries regarding dilemmas in public education and teaching that had scrolled ahead before hers. After expressing her belief that we are each born with an innate sense of creativity, Pearl went on to share photos and descriptions of some of her friends’ creative nooks and crannies, encouraging readers to “finally give yourself a little place to nurture the creativity inside of you!” Go, look, and be inspired!

Unlike her friends, I don’t have a work/craft room or full-fledged work shop, rather, I truly have a “nook.” One small area between the kitchen and laundry room, large enough for a desk and medium size bookcase. To sew, scrap, or make one of my wreaths, I have to spread my materials out along our large kitchen island countertop or across our dining room table. But for my reading, email communication, blogging, researching, photo printing, and organizing of craft materials and inspiration, my nook is just the right size. The only thing I’m missing are inspiration pinboards, something I hope to make for my own “creative space” in our next home (we relocate this summer). Until then, my Inspiration Binders will have to do, one for home decor, holidays and craft inspirations, and the other for kindergarten and teaching materials.

Here is the nook- I’ve taken several photos because it’s such a tight space and difficult to see in one shot:

My desk, chair, and bookcase are tucked in, out of traffic’s way (the door you see is the one to the laundry room), with enough wall space for my favorite artwork, photos, etc.

My killer whale art above my computer was made for me by my friend Karen (her family also introduced me to Bunnies by the Bay) while my Russian lacquer platter was purchased off of QVC years ago. Yes, yes, that is an “old” eMac, but guess what? It has everything I need at this point in time, except the ability to save space!

Anyone know how to get my webcam to work on Yahoo Messenger for Mac? Nothing, nothing, and more of nothing, despite my best efforts (and questions to Yahoo Groups), though the webcam will work on MacCam or something like that. I do cross stitch every now and again, so two of my samplers are framed and hanging on the right of the wall. And see those plastic drawer cubbies under the desk? They’re full of glue sticks/adhesives, ribbons, paper cutters, hot glue guns, etc.

This is the bookcase next to my desk, full of books, construction/craft/printing papers, my binders-in-progress, and drawers of correspondence note cards. The red bag? It’s an accordion file case, full of stickers, special papers, and other crafting embellishments, a Christmas gift from my grandmother.

On top of the bookcase are some of my favorite photos…wedding, me and my husband on our Harley, and our friends, Bill, Polly, and Shannon:

Nope, no piles of fabric in this house, darn it! Just a little to-do pile, stacked on top of storage drawers.

Finally, a plain white door just wouldn’t do for my space:

There’s the valentine wreath I made, the pretty pinkness of it seemed perfect for spring, along with block prints made from wood block carvings by my friend Sue. Yep, she did them all, the perfect Alaska images for this Alaskan girl!

I have no idea where we’ll be living when we return to Oz this summer… on post? Off? Three bedrooms or four? How many family rooms, and what’s the size of them? Will I have a creative corner, a creative nook, a study, or a closet?

I’m dreamin’ BIG!
